DeSoto Middle School consists of students in grades 6-8.  A variety of learning experiences, activities and organizations have been designed and implemented to fit the developmental needs of the adolescent student.  Citizenship skills are emphasized and recognizes by way of "Select Student" awards throughout the year.  Academics are stressed, and students are rewarded at the annual middle school awards program.  Subject area awards are presented as well as Principal Awards and the Headmaster's Award of Academic Excellence.  Organizations include the National Junior Beta Club, the MAIS Junior Student Council, a Journalism Club, Big Brother & Big Sister Club, Students Against Drinking and Drugs, a Christian Club and a Hunting and Fishing Club.  Student activities are a vital part of the middle school experience.  Some activities include:  Sadie Hawkins' Day, a Valentine's Day dance, Christmas celebration dinners, Spring Fling, and a tribute to the middle school competition class.  Middle school students compete each year in the following MAIS activities:  Academic Betterment Competition, district and state science fair and spelling bee.  A high percentage of students qualify each year for the Talent Identification Program sponsored by Duke University.
