DeSoto Middle School consists of students in grades 6-8.
A variety of learning experiences, activities and organizations have been
designed and implemented to fit the developmental needs of the adolescent
student. Citizenship skills are emphasized and recognizes by way of
"Select Student" awards throughout the year. Academics are stressed, and
students are rewarded at the annual middle school awards program. Subject
area awards are presented as well as Principal Awards and the Headmaster's Award
of Academic Excellence. Organizations include the National Junior Beta
Club, the MAIS Junior Student Council, a Journalism Club, Big Brother & Big
Sister Club, Students Against Drinking and Drugs, a Christian Club and a Hunting
and Fishing Club. Student activities are a vital part of the middle school
experience. Some activities include: Sadie Hawkins' Day, a
Valentine's Day dance, Christmas celebration dinners, Spring Fling, and a
tribute to the middle school competition class. Middle school students
compete each year in the following MAIS activities: Academic Betterment
Competition, district and state science fair and spelling bee. A high
percentage of students qualify each year for the Talent Identification Program
sponsored by Duke University.
